Seven Alchemical Stages as a Process of Manifesting and Life Transformation

I thought it would be fun and interesting to look at the process of 'manifesting' through the lens of alchemy.

It should be noted that this process is not essentially dissimilar to other methods of ‘manifesting’ including my own ‘manifesting synchronicity,’ Creative Visualization or even the dreaded “The Secret.” It does contain some nuances that may help all that sort of work properly seed, ferment, and grow into its proper form.

I should also note that I have a somewhat similar but certainly not identical outline of a use of these seven stages in my book, Sexual Sorcery. There is no intentional link between these.

There is a saying amongst the ‘manifesting folk’ that acorns contain oak trees that can in turn make hundreds of thousands more acorns which make more trees etc- in short that the universe is infinitely abundant and ever-increasing.
While this is true in theory it does not always work out quite that well in practice. There are worms, and rocks, and droughts and all sorts of other ways in which not every acorn actually reaches its full potential.
The advantage of human consciousness over acorn consciousness is that we can choose the ground in which we grow, and obtain for ourselves the proper food, air, water and sunlight that will nourish our growth in the direction that we choose. If we find ourselves growing improperly, we have the choice to pick ourselves up and move ourselves to greener pastures.  Of course, few indeed take advantage of this simple fact, but that is a subject for another day.
The following set of processes can be conducted in as little as ten to fifteen minutes and as much as several weeks. The amount of time spent is not nearly as important as the intense application of the three key factors of 1. Clear purpose, 2. Focused visualization, 3. Strong emotional intent.

Calcination: This alchemical stage is exposing the substances to heat. For our purpose this is a metaphor for igniting the will to make a change. All other possibilities must be eliminated as a specific goal becomes the focus of consciousness. You must have a single purpose for your manifestation. If you are visualizing and focusing upon a multitude of different matters you will put little into any of them. Focus on one thing and focus well. (This does not mean that you can only create one thing. It merely means that you must clearly focus upon one thing at a time. You could sit and go through this process ten times if you wish, but focus on one thing each time). This willed purpose will have the greatest power if it is in fact a product of the deeper parts of your consciousness, when it is something you feel is your ‘destiny,’ or as some say the ‘True Will.’ In The Book of Magick Power I refer to this as ‘inspiration,” meaning to be inspired by your higher consciousness.

Sublimation: sublimation is a process of spiritualizing. Here you look at your basic goal, will, desire or impulse and place it into the greater context of your life, your environment, your other projects and ambitions. How does this desire fit into your life? Is it the right direction for you to be going? If you find any resistance in your body or brain as you contemplate this, the object of your desire must be adjusted to fit into your personal life system more perfectly.
Solution: This stage is the combining the pieces together into a solution or amalgam. Here you begin to formulate a clear picture or rather “movie” of you experiencing the desired objective as occurring right now, as existing in this present moment. In The Book of Magick Power I refer to this stage as “image.”

Putrefaction: This next process again involves self-examination. Is this something that you really believe you can have? Are you wanting it for positive or negative reasons? If you are wanting it for negative, vain, or destructive reasons the matter will only be a poison to you, even if you accomplish it. Is this desire coming from feelings of poverty, fear, doubt, shame or greed? Or is it coming from joy, generosity, expansiveness and creativity? Examine your motives and your genuine belief in this as something that belongs in your life and that can really happen. Honesty is highly important at this stage and all stages. Resistance here, or a realization of its negative source means that you need to go back to previous steps, perhaps all the way to step one.
Distillation: Now your desire is really getting close to manifestation. Close your eyes and visualize your movie in the first person, as if you have it now, feeling it as powerfully as possible. In The Book of Magick Power I call this “energy.”
Coagulation: An internal shift will occur in which you genuinely know that the manifestation is coming. When you experience this unmistakable inner experience you will know that you are about to get your desire. It may take a few "distillations" to get to this experience.

Elixir: Actively expect and receive your desire. At this point you must also set about doing everything necessary to manifest your desire, taking whatever actions you must to assure your success.
Follow the above steps as exactly as possible in the spirit of scientific inquiry and let me know how your results come.

How Your Smile Can Change the World

Could simply smiling more often actually change the world for the better?

Researchers and self-help gurus have long observed that smiling has a physiological upon the body that causes you to feel happier. Put a smile on your face right now and then try to feel bad while maintaining the smile. Don't try too hard! I don't want you to break anything. ;-)

Simply smiling has a transformative effect upon your neurology that creates a more positive frame of mind. A recent study indicated that there may be a strong connection between frequent, warm smiling and longevity. Importantly, researchers have observed that a bright, radiant smile is contagious, and that leaders who smile are both more successful and have smiling, happy, employees, constituents and followers.

In other words, smiling makes you happy, makes others happy, is good for your health and spreads contagiously to others.

For the rest of the day, and tomorrow, try smilng at everyone you see. Make sure it is a genuine, bright, cheerful, warm and radiant smile. In other words, smile from your heart. When you are by yourself, smile to yourself. Keep a grin on your face. Be happy just to be alive, be happy that you have the oppportunity to smile at people, just be joyful. If you keep a smile on your face this will be quite easy.

Watch the effect this has on the people you encounter. Many will smile cheerfully back at you, and you will know that you have brightened their day. You have brightened the world a little with your act. Who knows what might come of this? Perhaps the person you cheered will cheer someone else and it will spread. It might even spread all the way to world leaders and more loving decisions will be made. There are after all only six degrees of separation between you and every other person.

On the other hand, some people may not smile back at you. This is perfectly okay. Those people will still be cheered by your smile, they just aren't quite ready to let go and just enjoy existence. You should still smile at them.

The more people smile at them, the more their gruffness will melt away until one day they will break down and smile at someine, perhaps it will be you. After all, smiling is contagious. Your joy is a gift you can share that you will not lose when you share it. In fact, it grows. If someone doesn't want the gift it is just fine. The joy is still yours either way. If people accept your joy and radiate it back to you then your joy grows all the more. Happiness is something that should always be shared.

If your smile is returned with a frown or a scowl, just be patient. That person is trapped in fear and doubt, and only joy and love will ever set them free. There is no reason to feel angry, hurt or even sad for someone who is not ready to smile. Everyone will find joy when they are ready. Find yours today. Share that radiant smile from your depths, and change the world.

The Six Categories of Magick

There are six basic matters in occultism-

Exploratory (or evolutionary)- both "internal" and "external" journeying, through self-enquiry and "astral travel" of various sorts. I would also include most invocation and evocation in this category, although the latter can sometimes be more purely practical in orientation and partakes of the category 'manifestation.'

Relational- seeking love, ending love, driving people away, gaining power over people. (love spells, control spells etc).

Celebratory (or cyclical/seasonal)- Holidays, Holy days, I would include ceremonial initiation in this category as well, although this latter occasionally contains exploratory. Divinatory or manifestation elements.

Health- bringing health, energy, or disease.

Divinatory-  In which we examine the future, a distant location or sometimes the past

Manifestation- in which we want something concrete and specific to happen in our lives as a result of the action. (money spells, work spells etc).

Which areas of magick interest you most? What does that say about you? Are there other times when you are interested in other areas?
